“If you were to play the cd Man in Shades without knowing that the singer\/guitar player is from Amsterdam (in the Netherlands), chances are that you would think you\u2019d be listening to a US born-and-bread singer-songwriter.\u00a0One with a very unique sound, though.\u00a0Brandt\u2019s roots are definitely in blues, but here he uses a more broad approach to his arrangements.\u00a0Sometimes with Jazz influences (the opener \u2018Life is a Joke\u2019 makes you think of Tim Buckley\u2019s jazz \u2013folk),\u00a0sometimes with Rock influences (Caught in the Headlights), but mostly pure Americana, using trumpet and soprano saxophone as well as banjo and mandoline.\u00a0After a jazz beginning and a rocker the cd becomes stronger and stronger, with 12 of his own compositions that prove that Brandt can easily do without playing covers.\u00a0This album is solid as steal and one of the greatest surprises that\u2019s come of of Dutch soil lately.”<\/span><\/p>\n
